Atlanta United captain Michael Parkhurst did not join the team for the beginning of Monday’s training session at the team’s facility in Marietta. The team will host Portland in the MLS Cup on Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Parkhurst sustained an injury when teammate Leandro Gonzalez Pirez rolled onto his ankle late in last week’s second leg of the Eastern Conference finals against New York Red Bulls. Parkhurst said after the game that he expects to be fine and to be able to play.

Atlanta United manager Gerardo Martino on Monday said that he expects Parkhurst will play. He said Parkhurst was doing different training exercises on Monday.

Parkhurst, 34, made 32 starts during the regular season and all four playoff games. He finished third in the MLS Defender of the Year voting, behind Red Bulls’ Aaron Long and Seattle’s Chad Marshall.
