Atlanta United may be on the verge of signing Oscar Romero as its third Designated Player, according to at least two reports.

Romero, 24, is a native of Paraguay who is central midfielder for Racing Club in Argentina’s first division. He has made 26 appearances for Paraguay’s national team. He would join midfielders Miguel Almiron, also a native of Paraguay, and Argentina’s Hector Villalba as the team’s three Designated Players.

Atlanta United manager Gerardo Martino was formerly the coach of Paraguay’s national team (2007-11) and managed clubs in the South American country.

The reported transfer fee for Romero is between $6-7 million.

An Atlanta United spokesman declined to comment.

After Tuesday's expansion draft , Atlanta United has 18 players on its roster: two goalkeepers (Alex Tambakis and Alex Kann), four defenders (Michael Parkhurst, Zach Loyd, Mark Bloom and Mikey Ambrose), eight midfielders (Hector Villalba, Miguel Almiron, Junior Burgos, Andrew Carleton, Chris Goslin, Chris McCann, Kevin Kratz and Harrison Heath), and four forwards (Kenwyne Jones, Brandon Vazquez, Romario Williams and Jeffrey Otoo). The team reportedly is trying to sign U.S. men's national team goalkeeper Brad Guzan . Neither Eales nor Bocanegra would discuss Guzan on Monday.
