Atlanta United may have lost Brek Shea for the remainder of the season, while adding a possible replacement on Monday.
Brek Shea has a torn ACL, and the team is working to complete a trade for Chicago’s Mo Adams, according to a report from The Athletic. Atlanta United had no comment.
Shea suffered a knee injury in the opening minutes of Sunday's 2-1 loss at Seattle. Manager Frank de Boer said that Shea would undergo a medical scan on Monday. The team chartered a plane back to Atlanta immediately after Sunday's game.
If Shea’s ACL is torn, it is likely that he will miss the remainder of the regular season.
De Boer said on Sunday that Atlanta United was looking at possibly adding a fullback. Adams isn't a fullback. Adams, 22, is a defensive midfielder who hasn't featured often for Chicago this season. The tenth pick in last year's draft has five starts as part of 10 appearances totaling less than 500 minutes this season, after 10, 15 and less than 1,000 last season.
It’s not clear what need Adams fills because Atlanta United already has Darlington Nagbe, Eric Remedi and Jeff Larentowicz that it uses as defensive midfielders. Additionally, it has Darlington Nagbe and the recently acquired Emerson Hyndman.
De Boer is scheduled to speak to the media on Tuesday after training ahead of Wednesday’s game against Houston at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The team is thin at fullback with only Franco Escobar as a true fullback on the right. Escobar will miss Wednesday’s game because of yellow card accumulation. On the left, Brek Shea, Mikey Ambrose and George Bello are injured.
Adams, a native of England who who played in the youth systems at Nottingham Forest and then Derby Country, also starred with Atlanta United’s Miles Robinson at Syracuse.
Atlanta United has one Reserve spot left open on its roster. It also has one International slot available. Adams occupied a Supplemental slot on Chicago’s roster and doesn’t take up an International slot.
