Atlanta United defender Zach Loyd was placed on the season-ending injury list on Tuesday.
Loyd, 30, didn’t make an appearance in the league for the team. He did play the first half of the 3-2 win over Charleston in the U.S. Open Cup.
Atlanta United Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said they were trying to set up loan options for Loyd to get him some playing time.
But Bocanegra said that Loyd came to him within past few days and said he was experiencing some recurring symptoms related to a concussion he sustained while playing for Dallas last season. Bocanegra said Loyd told him that, after talking it over with his family, he felt it best to stop playing for the rest of the season.
“He’s pretty bummed he’s not going to play any more this year,” Bocanegra said.
Loyd was acquired by Atlanta United in the expansion draft in December after being left unprotected by Dallas. He suffered a groin injury that prevented him from joining Atlanta United until a few days into training camp in Bradenton, Fla.
He has trained with the team since, including in the days leading up to last week’s game at Sporting KC.
The move opened a roster spot for Atlanta United to acquire D.C. United and veteran MLS defender Bobby Boswell.
