Atlanta United’s Miguel Almiron left Sunday’s game against Montreal in the 17th minute with an apparent injury. The Five Stripes defeated Montreal 2-0.

Atlanta United manager Gerardo Martino said Almiron suffered a muscle injury and is scheduled to see a doctor on Monday.

Asked who would start in Almiron’s place, Martino said, “There’s still time.”

Almiron, an attacking midfielder, has nine goals and a team-leading 13 assists this season. He had started 29 games for Atlanta United and played 2,348 minutes before Sunday’s game. That doesn’t include games and minutes played for the Paraguayan national team.

“He’s played a lot of game, but it’s also true that as a team we’ve become accustomed to playing one game, and then a game at midweek,” Martino said. “It’s possible that could be another explanation.”

Atlanta United is in third place in the Eastern Conference with 49 points. It needs one more win to become the first MLS expansion team to clinch a playoff spot since Seattle in 2009.

The Five Stripes have endured injuries to several key starters this season. Josef Martinez missed 13 games because of an injury sustained while playing with the Venezuelan national team. Kenwyne Jones has missed time because of a knee injury sustained while playing with Trinidad and Tobago. Greg Garza has missed the past three games because of an injured hamstring.

Atlanta United has five games remaining. It will host Philadelphia on Wednesday.
