Continuing what has already become an extremely interesting offseason that is just a few days old, Atlanta United acquired left fullback Jose Hernandez. Terms of the acquisition weren’t disclosed.

Hernandez, 20 , comes to the Five Stripes from Caracas FC in his native Venezuela. He has 14 appearances for the club this year and 25 in his career. Hernandez helped lead Venezuela to the final of the Under-20 World Cup earlier this year and has represented his country at the Under-17 level.

Hernandez can also play as left wingback, in the midfield or at right back, which may be good because the team already announced the acquisitions of midfielder Jeff Larentowicz, left back Greg Garza and centerback/right back Franco Escobar. It seems likely that Hernandez will gain experience at the team’s USL club in Gwinnett this season.

“We identified José as one of the young talented defenders in South America, and we’re thrilled that he’s committed to continuing his development with our club,” Atlanta United Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said in a statement from the team. “He’s an aggressive 1v1 defender and has the ability to get involved in the attack.”
