FLOWERY BRANCH -- Falcons cornerback Kendall Sheffield, who didn’t play in any of the team’s three exhibition games, was placed on injured reserve after Wednesday’s practice.

The Falcons also released punter Dom Maggio from injured reserve with an injury settlement.

Sheffield, who has started 20 games over the past two seasons, hasn’t practiced in weeks and had been listed as the third cornerback throughout the first preseason under new coach Arthur Smith.

Linebacker Brandon Copeland, who plays inside and outside, was participating during the open portion of practice and was officially listed as “limited” on Wednesday. Copeland, who’s entering his sixth NFL season and his first in Atlanta, was the only player listed on the team’s first league-mandate injury report of the season submitted Wednesday afternoon.

Smith has been guarded about offseason surgeries and injuries and mentioned that ‘it shouldn’t be too much on there’ when asked about the injury report before Wednesday’s practice.
