FLOWERY BRANCH -- Last season, Mike Davis was Carolina’s replacement for an injured Christian McCaffrey, and he parlayed his performance into a two-year, $5.5 million deal with the Falcons.

“It means a lot to us because it’s a divisional game,” Davis said of facing the Panthers. “It’s not a personal thing with me. It’s a divisional game. It’s something that we want bad. You want to win these games.”

The Falcons and Panthers are chasing the Buccaneers (6-1) and the Saints (4-2) in the NFC South. The two teams split the games last season, with the Panthers winning in Atlanta on Oct. 10, which turned out to be Dan Quinn’s final game as Falcons head coach. They will meet again at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Falcons and the Panthers appear to be moving in different directions. The Falcons have won three of their past four, while the Panthers have lost four consecutive after opening with three consecutive wins.

“They play us hard every year,” Falcons wide receiver Russell Gage said. “You know, that’s expected because it’s a divisional game. They see us twice a year. We have tendencies. They have tendencies. Definitely, I think we know what we have cut out for us when we go into these (NFC South) games.”
