HOUSTON – The Braves won their second World Series championship since moving to Atlanta with a 7-0 victory over the Astros on Tuesday.
A handful of notable stats from the series:
- While it’s the Braves’ second title in Atlanta, it’s their fourth overall. They also won in 1957 and 1914 in Milwaukee and Boston, respectively. The Braves’ two titles remain Atlanta’s only championships across MLB, the NFL and the NBA.
- Slugger Jorge Soler was named World Series MVP. He hit three homers in the series -- in Games 1, 4 and 6. Soler became the first player to homer in the first plate appearance of Game 1 of a Fall Classic. His late homer was the difference in Game 4. His three-run blast opened the scoring Tuesday.
Soler joins Tom Glavine (1995) as the only World Series MVPs in Atlanta history. He’s the fourth designated hitter to win World Series MVP, following David Ortiz (2013), Hideki Matsui (2009) and Paul Molitor (1993).
Soler also became the fourth Braves player to homer three times in a World Series (Lonnie Smith, 1991; Ryan Klesko, 1995; Hank Aaron, 1957). He’s the sixth player to hit three go-ahead home runs in the World Series, joining a list that includes Babe Ruth (1926), Lou Gehrig (1928), Gene Tenace (1972), Curtis Granderson (2015) and George Springer (2017).
- Left-hander Max Fried pitched six scoreless innings in Game 6. He became the seventh pitcher to record at least six scoreless innings without issuing a walk in a possible clinching game. He’s the first to collect six strikeouts without issuing a walk or allowing a run in a potential World Series clincher.
- First baseman Freddie Freeman’s resume keeps growing: multi-time All-Star, National League MVP, World Series champion. Freeman joined Fred McGriff (1996) as the only players in Braves postseason history to hit five homers during a run. Freeman completed his performance with a solo shot Tuesday.
- Shortstop Dansby Swanson homered twice in the World Series, becoming the ninth shortstop to do so. His five career postseason home runs are tied for seventh-most among shortstops in MLB history.
- The Braves hit 11 homers, which tied their franchise record in a World Series. They’re the eighth team to reach 11 homers in a World Series. The teams who’ve hit more: The 2017 Astros (15), 2012 Giants (14), 1956 Yankees (12) and 2020 Dodgers (12).
- The Braves became the 24th team to shut out its opponent in the clinching World Series game. They’re the first to achieve such since the 2005 White Sox against the Astros.
- Lefty Tyler Matzek made 13 appearances in the postseason, capped by his two scoreless innings Tuesday. That’s tied for the second-most appearances in a single postseason behind only Brandon Morrow (2017) and Paul Assenmacher (1997), who pitched in 14 contests.
