Who would have been the Braves emergency catcher?

Good question.

Manager Brian Snitker might have been faced with the dilemma in Thursday’s 7-6 victory over the Nationals in 10 innings. Stephen Vogt was forced to leave the game in the seventh inning, after hitting two home runs, with a lower-body injury. Travis d’Arnaud, the normal starter, was called off the bench to replace Vogt.

Snitker was asked after the game who his emergency catcher would have been if something had happened to d’Arnaud. Snitker might have been kidding when he suggested third baseman Austin Riley, the MVP candidate.

“I keep looking at Riley thinking the gear would look good on him,” Snitker said. “When I look around the diamond, that’s the one guy who could probably do it.”

Good thing it didn’t come to that.

The Braves will need to call up a replacement backup catcher should Vogt’s injury prove as serious as it sounded. Snitker said Vogts’ hip popped while trying to make a throw to third base on a wild pitch.
