Former University of Tennessee quarterback Josh Dobbs will start for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first exhibition game on Friday against the New York Giants.
On Wednesday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced Dobbs was named starter over backup quarterback Landry Jones who is recovering from an abdominal injury. Starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will rest for the Steelers’ first exhibition game.
"One man's misfortune is another man's opportunity," Tomlin said, according to ESPN. "I know (Dobbs is) excited about it. I know I'm excited about watching him play the quarterback position in that group."
The former Alpharetta High School quarterback was drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Tomlin said he wants to see how Dobbs handles game day stress and communication on and off the field, according to ESPN.
"You're a communicator. You have to understand, you have to say it with confidence and speak clearly and loudly for your team to hear," Dobbs said after he was named starter on Wednesday, according to ESPN. "You have to own the position. You have to own the playbook."
In four years at Tennessee, Dobbs threw for 7,138 yards, 53 touchdowns and 29 interceptions.
