Alabama linebacker VanDarius Cowan was dismissed from the team after violating team rules.
Head coach Nick Saban released a statement following Cowan’s dismissal.
“VanDarius has been dismissed from the team and is no longer a part of our football program due to a violation of team rules,” Saban said in a statement. “Each of us has a responsibility to represent The University of Alabama in a first-class way, and failure to meet those standards can’t be tolerated. We wish VanDarius the very best in the future.”
According to the Tuscaloosa News, Cowan was arrested after an incident at the High Tide bar in June. The sophomore linebacker is accused of punching a 26-year-old in the face at the bar.
He was charged with third-degree assault and turned himself in to Tuscaloosa Police on Thursday. He immediately posted $500 bond, according to the report.
The linebacker played in seven games as a true freshman last season. Cowan was a 4-star recruit from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and committed to the Crimson Tide in April 2016.
