The Braves’ intrasquad game Wednesday concluded after 2-1/2 innings due to a rainout. The “visiting” Braves were leading the “home” Braves, 4-0.
In the bit of action that was played, Ronald Acuna and Dansby Swanson shined. Acuna doubled twice off Mike Foltynewicz and scored the game’s first run on an Adam Duvall hit. One of the doubles first looked like a single, but Acuna – showing no signs of taking it easy in an exhibition – dashed into second.
Swanson blasted a three-run homer on an 0-2 count off Foltynewicz before the rain overtook Truist Park. He sent it opposite field into the Chop House.
Wednesday marked the second-to-last tune-ups for Foltynewicz and Sean Newcomb. The former flashed good and bad – Swanson got ahold of a decent away pitch – while Newcomb pitched well in his brief showing. Newcomb is expected to begin the season in the rotation after spending much of last season in the bullpen.
The Braves will play another intrasquad game Thursday afternoon. They’d planned to play around seven innings Wednesday. Mark Melancon, Luke Jackson, Darren O’Day, A.J. Minter and Grant Dayton were among the pitchers scheduled to appear.
After Thursday’s game, the Braves will take Friday off and play one more intrasquad contest Saturday. They’ll host the Marlins for two exhibition games next week before the regular-season opener at the Mets on July 24.
