Things got hot for the masked star of an upcoming, action-packed play Wednesday night. Too hot.

“Zorro” had to be transported to the hospital after burning his hands during rehearsal, an Alliance Theater spokeswoman said Thursday.

“It was the first time the cast had worked through the show with the pyrotechnic elements and an actor was too close when one was set off,” Kathleen Covington, spokeswoman for the theater, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The actor, identified on the theater's website as Adam Jacobs, was taken to the hospital for evaluation, Covington said. But the burns were minor and Jacobs should be able to return to the stage in a few days, she said.

Wednesday night was just the second rehearsal on stage for the cast, which had been using the theater’s rehearsal hall. The set for “Zorro” is one of the most elaborate the Alliance has built, the theater says.

“Safety is always our first priority for our actors, our crew and our audiences,” Covington said in an emailed statement. “The pyrotechnic elements are being evaluated and modified to ensure the safety of all involved.”

In the meantime, the show will go on.

“Zorro” is scheduled to open April 10 and Jacobs will be there, Covington said. Tickets are available online.
