Mark Blum, who recently starred in Netflix’s “You,” died Thursday from complications of COVID-19, according to several reports.
Blum, 69, had made a name for himself on screen and on Broadway. One of his most recent roles had been that of Mr. Mooney in the Netflix hit series “You.” He also had roles in “Desperately Seeking Susan” and “Crocodile Dundee.”
On Twitter on Thursday afternoon, Rebecca Damon, vice president of SAG-AFTRA, confirmed Blum’s passing and what led to his death. She noted that Blum had served as a board member for Playwright Horizons in New York.
“It is with such deep sorrow that I’m writing to share the news that our friend and former board member Mark Blum has passed away as a result of complications from the coronavirus,” she wrote. “Mark was a dedicated Screen Actors Guild and SAG-AFTRA board member serving from 2007-2013, a passionate champion for merger, and a tireless advocate for members.
“Those of us lucky enough to have known him will treasure our memories of a gifted actor, a master teacher, a loyal friend, and a beautiful human.”
Another theater veteran and friend wrote:
“He was one of the most respected actors in New York: a beacon of fierce intelligence, dry wit & deep kindness on stage and off. A tragic loss,” playwright Jack Canfora added in a tweet.
The New Jersey native got his start on the stage in the 1970s before transitioning to film and television, starting with a role in the 1983 film “Lovesick,” followed by one in the legendary “St. Elsewhere” in 1984.
He is survived by his wife, actress Janet Zarish.
