An 11-year-old hit by a car while trick-or-treating at a North Carolina church died Sunday night, according to reports.
Noah Chambers was attempting to cross the street about 7:15 p.m. near Bethel United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, North Carolina, on Friday when an SUV struck him, according to WCNC-TV in Charlotte. His father Robert Chambers told the news station Sunday night that his son died Sunday afternoon.
"He is in a better place. His spirit, his attitude, his joy, his laughter," Chambers told WCNC-TV. "He is up there looking over everybody."
Noah had been in critical condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center since the incident. According to WRAL, the driver of the Jeep SUV that hit Noah was not speeding or under the influence when the crash occurred. No charges have been filed against the driver, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Noah was a sixth grade student at Rockingham County Middle School, according to a release from the school system Sunday night.
A GoFundMe was set up by his uncle Michael Smith to help Noah's family. So far, it has raised more than $8,000.
Though the family is mourning the loss of the gregarious middle schooler, Noah’s father shared some encouraging news with the news station. Noah’s organs will be donated to at least seven people, he said.
"I know this is what he would have wanted," Chambers said in an online statement. "He has the same beautiful giving soul as his sweet mother Brooke Ashley Dupree and his grandfather Robert. Thank you all for the prayers and please keep them coming."
