The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office Wednesday identified the toddler struck and killed by a daycare van in southwest Atlanta Tuesday afternoon as 2-year-old Brandy Buffington.
Investigators believe the van had dropped off children in the 700 block of University Avenue and was backing up when the driver struck the girl, according to Officer John Chafee with Atlanta police. Buffington had not been a passenger on the van, he said.
“It appears that the child was playing outside and went behind the van when the accident occurred,” Chafee said in an emailed statement. “At this time the investigation remains active and no charges have been filed.”
Buffington was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, but did not survive, Chafee said.
The driver who Buffington remained on the scene, according to police.
Channel 2 Action News is reporting that the child's family does not have insurance to cover the cost of a funeral or burial and is seeking donations on the website youcaring.com.
