Riverdale police on Thursday arrested a 17-year-old who allegedly stole a car and robbed two businesses with a second suspect, who has not been located, officials said.
Police believe Michael Weems and another person robbed two businesses on Highway 85 in Riverdale — Mattresses For Sale and Angie’s Beauty Supply — on Wednesday. Police said the suspects, whose faces were partially covered, fired a gun into the air, demanded money and fled in a car, according to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office.
The car, police discovered, had been stolen from a nearby subdivision just moments before the first robbery.
Officers arrested Weems after seeing him behind the wheel of the car on Thursday, and following a short foot chase, the sheriff’s office said. Police said he was wearing the same clothes as the suspect in a surveillance video from the beauty supply store.
Weems was charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated assault and theft by receiving stolen property vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.
The second suspect in the robberies is unknown, police said. Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call police at 770-909-5430.
