An 8-year-old Penfield, N.Y. boy died Monday while trying to save several relatives from a fire in his grandfather’s trailer home.
Tyler J. Doohan was able to wake six of his relatives and was trying to help his disabled uncle, Steven D. Smith, 54, and his grandfather, Louis J. Beach, 57, when he died, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. All three died in the blaze, authorities said.
The boy is being called a hero for alerting sleeping family members to the fire, which began about 4:45 a.m.
“He saved those other six people,” said Penfield Fire Chief Chris Ebmeyer.
The other relatives included his grandmother, an aunt and cousins, the paper said.
