Two powerful earthquakes struck a region of southern Japan late this week, leading to at least 30 deaths, hundreds of injuries and extensive damage.

The province on the island of Kyushu was in the process of recovering from a magnitude-6.5 quake that struck late Thursday when a more powerful magnitude-7.3 quake hit the area early Saturday morning.

Rain is in the forecast, hampering rescue efforts and fears of landslides. Aftershocks continue to rock the region.

Hundreds of people are in shelters, while others remain trapped.
