World thankful for Twitter as Facebook and Instagram go down

People in US jokingly lament having to interact with family on Thanksgiving

As the Americans snap photos of family and food this Thanksgiving, they have only one place to post them on social media: Twitter.

Facebook and Instagram both went down Thursday. WhatsApp, also owned by Facebook, seemed to be working fine.

The Independent reported that vast numbers of people complained about the issue, according to tracking website Down Detector. The issues were seen across the world, but not everyone appeared to be affected.

Some users reported only parts of the platforms were down, however. Twitter posts joked people were forced to interact with family because of the outage and expressing thanks for Twitter.

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are thought to share much of the same underlying infrastructure, the Independent reported, "which means that problems on one of the services are usually echoed by problems at the other two."

But users weren’t pleased.
