A logging company worker shoveling dirt from the roadway was struck and killed by a car late Thursday morning in Carroll County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Charles Pollard, 45, of Ranburne, Ala., was hit near the intersection of Ga. 5 and Cavender Creek Road around 11:25 a.m., a GSP spokesperson said.

Pollard was working on the side of the road removing dirt and gravel when investigators believe he stepped into the path of a 2004 Nissan Sentra. He died at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan, Rachel Arnold, 83, of Whitesburg, was charged with driving while unlicensed, the GSP said.
