A Cobb County man, described by a judge as “a woman’s worst nightmare,” pleaded guilty Monday to choking and trying to rape her in her backyard more than three years ago.

Joshua Abdual Jacobs, 23, of Mableton, was sentenced to 18 years in prison and 22 years on probation, Cobb District Attorney Vic Reynolds’ office said Wednesday in a statement.

Prosecutors said Jacobs went to the victim’s home on Aug. 13, 2015, while she was gardening in the backyard of her Mableton home. He came behind her and grabbed the woman around her neck until she passed out. She was about 60 years old at the time of the attack.

When the victim came to, “she was on the ground with her shorts around her ankles and a male on top of her simulating sexual movements,” the DA’s office said. Jacobs ran away at that time, but the woman recognized him from around the neighborhood.

He pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, attempted rape and false imprisonment.

“While the trauma that was inflicted on the victim cannot be undone, this sentence holds the offender accountable for his predatory actions and serves to protect our community,” Assistant District Attorney Courtney Veal said in the statement.
