A 50-year-old Gwinnett County woman died Friday morning when the vehicle she was in riding in was struck by a Freightliner, police said.

Kim Nguyen, of Lawrenceville, was the front-seat passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, Phuoc Thach, southbound on Buford Drive, also known as Ga. 20, according to Capt. Greg Vaughn with the Lawrenceville Police Department.

As Thach, 51, attempted a left-hand turn on to Hurricane Shoals Drive around 8:30 a.m., the vehicle was hit by a truck driven by Lucio Lopez, also of Lawrenceville, Vaughn said.

After striking Thach’s vehicle, the truck then hit another vehicle and damaged a traffic signal controller before ending up in a gas station parking lot, according to police.

Nguyen died at the scene of the wreck, and four others were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center with minor injuries, Vaughn said.

Traffic in the area was delayed for hours Friday morning, due to the wreck investigation and impact on traffic signals, according to police.

Witnesses told Channel 2 Action News they believed Thach was attempting to beat the truck when it turned. The wreck remains under investigation.
