A woman died of the injuries she sustained in a Sunday morning car wreck in southwest Atlanta.
The crash happened on Lee Street at Van Buren Street around 9:30 a.m.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the woman was stopped in traffic when her Honda was rear-ended by a Ford and caught fire, Atlanta police spokesman Officer John Chafee said. The woman, who had minor burns but critical injuries, was extricated from her vehicle and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where she later died.
She was identified as Juanita Waters, 69, of Atlanta, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Authorities said a total of three vehicles were involved and another driver had minor injuries.
Police are continuing to investigate.
DUI suspect charged in Smyrna pedestrian’s death
A Smyrna woman was struck and killed Saturday night by man who has been charged with driving under the influence, police said.
Amaliss Baskin Martin, 51, was hit around 10:30 p.m. in the 2100 block of Windy Hill Road.
Investigators said Martin was walking across Windy Hill Road on her way to The Retreat at Windy Hill when she was struck by a 2009 Nissan Rouge driven by Mark Edward Hume, also of Smyrna.
Martin was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Hume was arrested and taken to the Smyrna City Jail, where he took a breath test that registered .205 — above the legal limit of 0.08, Smyrna police spokesman Ed Cason said.
He is now being held without bond in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on charges of DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving and improper use of a center turn lane.
