A Macon mother was charged with first-degree child cruelty after reportedly leaving her 6-year-old son unattended in a parked car. The boy was discovered crying inside the car in a store parking lot, according to WGXA.

Witnesses called police when he was left “for a long period of time” about 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The police got the boy out unhurt and stayed with him until his mother, 28-year-old Chimequea Rena Johnson, came back.

Surveillance footage showed the child was alone for about 30 minutes.

The police report read that Johnson “came nonchalantly towards the vehicle.”

Johnson claimed her son wanted to stay in the car, but police still contacted the Department of Family and Child Services and the child’s godmother to take him home.

Johnson was arrested and put in Bibb County Jail on a charge of first-degree child cruelty. She was released on an $8,450 bond.
