With The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race postponed this year, the Atlanta Police Department warned people against running or walking the course on the Fourth of July.

APD noted in a tweet Friday that the course will not be closed to car traffic on Independence Day.

With hashtags including #MyPersonalPeachtree and #APDCares, the police department said in the tweet that people should avoid running or walking the course on Saturday for safety reasons.

The race has been run down Peachtree Street every Fourth of July since 1970, but this year due to the coronavirus pandemic it has been postponed until Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26.

Atlanta Track Club executive director Rich Kenah told the AJC two months ago when the decision to postpone was announced that the guidance was that "there is just not enough information at this time, not enough testing, and the medical community just would not be comfortable with bringing thousands of people together so quickly."
