A mixture of snow, sleet and rain fell in Adairsville and other parts of Bartow and Gordon counties Saturday as relief efforts continued following a deadly tornado that struck the areas earlier in the week.

Despite temperatures in the mid-30s and the icy mixture, hundreds of volunteers were in Adairsville helping the hundreds of victims of Wednesday's 160-mph tornado, which leveled homes and businesses. The tornado killed one local man.

The wintry mix is not expected to make its way as far south as metro Atlanta. After some overnight showers, conditions should be clear by early Sunday, but winds with gusts up to 30 mph are expected locally, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz.

A wide area of light to heavy snow fell in far North Georgia with heavy downfalls in some locations in the mountains. Several inches were expected in some areas in higher elevations. Nitz said his concern was ice and black ice on roads in some parts of North Georgia early Sunday.

A winter weather advisory was in effect into Sunday morning for the mountain counties.

The weather Sunday will be clear but windy, with highs in the low 50s in metro Atlanta. The daytime highs will gradually increase Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with partly cloudy to sunny skies by Wednesday and highs in the mid 50s to 60. Daytime temperatures will drop back to the mid 50s by Thursday.

“Average high this time of year is in the mid 50s, so it’ll be pretty close to normal here for the next five days,” Nitz said.

The nighttime lows will be around 34 Sunday, dropping to 31 Monday night but returning to around 40 Tuesday through Thursday nights.
