Heavy smoke was reported Wednesday morning as a massive wildfire has spread to almost 600 acres in Ware County.

The fire is burning on the north side of U.S. 1, about 8 miles southeast of Waycross, according to Georgia Wildlife Management.

On Tuesday night, the Ware County Sheriff’s Office said Georgia Forestry Commission units were on scene working on containment lines, according to Action News Jacksonville.

One viewer said officials had U.S. 1 North shut down near Racepond Road on Tuesday evening.
