It will be warmer outdoors, but the music will be scorching inside the Georgia Dome during Saturday’s 3 p.m. Honda Battle of the Bands.
The annual competition for marching bands from Historically Black Colleges and Universities this year features the bands from Morehouse College, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, North Carolina A&T, Winston-Salem State, Alabama A&M, Alabama State and South Carolina State.
Next door to the Dome, the Georgia World Congress Center hosts Saturday’s Cheersport Atlanta Grand Championship cheerleading competition.
After the bitter cold of the last few days, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said afternoon temperatures will be a little warmer this weekend, climbing into the mid-40s Saturday and to around 50 Sunday. Each day will begin with readings in the low- to mid-20s.
Chilly overnight temperatures won’t stop nighttime sign work that is expected to close lanes of I-85 just north of downtown.
The state Department of Transportation said the two left lanes of I-85 in both directions will be closed during the overnight hours between Lenox and Clairmont roads.
“Delays are expected and motorists should plan ahead to avoid traffic,” DOT spokesman Mark McKinnon said.
In Cobb County, bridge work will block the two left lanes of I-285 eastbound at I-75 from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. each night. The ramp from I-285 eastbound to I-75 northbound will also be blocked. Northbound I-75 traffic from I-285 eastbound will be diverted onto I-75 southbound to Cumberland Boulevard, where motorists can exit and re-enter I-75 northbound.
In Douglas County, authorities will once again be briefly pacing traffic on I-20 eastbound and westbound at times each day for survey work between Ga. 5 and Liberty Road.
