The state Department of Transportation has pulled the plug on the triple and quadruple lane closures that were planned for this weekend on an intown section of I-85 South, due to the high probability of rain.

However, one right lane of Ga. 400 South between Peachtree Road and Sidney Marcus Boulevard will be closed from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday.

And two right lanes of I-85 South from a half-mile north of Clairmont Road to North Druid Hills will be closed during the same time frame. Crews will be removing old sign structures.

The work is a remnant of the project to revamp the Ga. 400/I-85 interchange that opened to drivers on Wednesday.

The department said that the lane closures originally planned for this weekend — triple lane closures during daylight hours and quadruple lane closures overnight on the same segment of I-85 South that would have caused major traffic delays — will still be implemented at a later date.

The lane closures are necessary for the contractor to install a new overhead sign on I-85 South that alerts drivers to the upcoming entrance ramp to Ga. 400 North, said GDOT spokesman Mark McKinnon.

The timing for that aspect of the project has not been set. McKinnon said it could be next week or several weeks from now.

Other work that will affect traffic this weekend includes the closing of two right lanes on I-75/I-85 (the Downtown Connector) northbound from Central Avenue to Edgewood Avenue from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday for asphalt repairs.
