A former University of Georgia walk-on football player and recent graduate is accused of sexually assaulting a woman, according to police.

Jamal Payette, who turns 23 on Friday, was arrested Monday night after a 23-year-old woman told Athens-Clarke County police she had been assaulted in her home. The woman told police she had been in a relationship with Payette and that he had also tried to strangle her, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

Payette, of Cleveland, Ga., was charged with aggravated sexual battery and booked into the Clarke County jail, where he was being held Thursday night without bond.

A White County High School graduate, Payette graduated from UGA in December with a degree in finance.
