The report of a triple shooting Thursday afternoon in Johns Creek was apparently a hoax. But the investigation continues for police, who want to find the person responsible for the call.

The shootings reportedly happened in the 7000 block of Carlisle Lane at a home located in the Country Club of the South neighborhood, the city’s police and fire departments said.

A man called Alpharetta police and said he had shot three people and was holding a fourth person hostage, according to Doug Nurse, spokesman for Johns Creek police.

But no evidence of a shooting or a hostage was found at the home, Nurse said.

Investigators were working late Thursday to determine who made the call and why.

Making phony calls to 911 to draw a response from law enforcement is a crime known as “swatting.”

“I think it’s a very distasteful type of situation to waste the resources of the police and fire departments,” Lt. Nick Curry with Johns Creek police told reporters. “There’s a family right now that’s very upset over a prank call.”
