More than 75 people gathered for a rally to protest the Trayvon Martin verdict Saturday in Marietta — a rally that was postponed last Saturday due to bad weather.
The rally was part of more than 100 protests across the country protesting the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of his killer George Zimmerman.
On July 13, Zimmerman was found not guilty in the death of Martin in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman’s attorneys argued that the neighborhood watch captain shot the unarmed black teenager in self-defense because the teen was beating him up.
Other rallies across the country were held on July 20.
“It is an expression of outrage and indignation to the verdict in the Trayvon Martin case,” said Ben Williams, President of the Cobb County chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, who led the rally.
The group started at the Cobb County Civic Center and marched about a mile to downtown Marietta.
“It goes way beyond the Trayvon Martin verdict,” said Cynthia Jenkins, of Cobb County. “There has been a systematic assault against young black boys in this country.”
