Georgia State Patrol released more details Saturday about a fatal midday accident on I-20 that continued to back up traffic for drivers heading to or from the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club well into the afternoon.

The multi-vehicle accident occurred around noon at mile marker 112, one mile west of Monticello Highway in Morgan County. Investigators believe an eastbound vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway, came back into the travel lane and sideswiped a second vehicle.

The first vehicle then careened off the roadway and hit a tree. The second vehicle crossed the median and slammed into a third vehicle, causing the third to strike a fourth vehicle.

The fourth vehicle hit a guardrail and overturned.

The drivers of the first and second vehicles were taken to Morgan Memorial Hospital. The driver of the third vehicle was killed. And a passenger of the third and driver of the fourth were taken to Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

Westbound traffic near mile marker 112 is blocked. Eastbound traffic was still very slow as of 3:15 p.m., according to the Georgia State Patrol. Authorities warned that eastbound lanes may be closed periodically until the scene is clear.

The names of the drivers and passengers involved in the wreck were not immediately available.
