Authorities are investigating a school bus crash that left a driver dead and two children injured in Newton County.

Mark Griffin of Covington died in the crash about 4:30 p.m. Monday, Newton County sheriff’s investigator Jeff Alexander told Channel 2 Action News.

Griffin was driving a Nissan Maxima on Christian Road when he attempted to turn left on Brown Bridge Road.

“Mr. Griffin turned directly in front of the oncoming school bus,” Alexander said.

He was pronounced dead on the scene by Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis.

The injured children were treated at the scene and released to their families, Alexander said.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol are investigating the crash.
