A retired Fayetteville fire marshal was killed in a car crash Monday on I-85 near LaGrange.

Martin “Marty” Mundok and his wife Mary were headed out of town when the crash happened during heavy showers about 3:55 p.m., according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

A pickup truck driver traveling northbound on I-85 lost control, crossed the median and entered southbound lanes, colliding with the Mundoks' vehicle, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Mary Mundok had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital in Columbus.

Mundok worked for the Fayetteville Fire Department for 28 years, the last 14 as fire marshal, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

He retired in January.
