Two men were killed early Tuesday in a fiery crash at the entrance of a Cobb County park.

The wreck happened just after midnight on Lower Roswell Road near Asheforde Drive, Cobb police Sgt. Dana Pierce said. That’s the site of the Gold Branch Unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

Preliminary information indicates a white Dodge Challenger was traveling north on Lower Roswell Road faster than the posted 40 mph speed limit.

When the driver, 21-year-old Joseph C. Gerace of Tampa, Florida, approached Asheforde Drive, he lost control on the wet roadway, Pierce said.

“The vehicle traveled off the eastern side of the road, collided with a stone sign at the park entrance and caught fire,” he said.

Gerace and and his passenger, 24-year-old Matthew L. Silvester of St. Augustine, Florida, died on the scene.

Anyone with information that could help the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office identify the men is asked to call 770-499-3987.
