Gwinnett County police are investigating a deadly wrong-way crash on I-85 south near Jimmy Carter Boulevard that shut down the interstate for hours.

Police released few details about the accident, which occurred just before 3:30 a.m.

One person was killed in the crash, Cpl. Michele Pihera told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Though all lanes reopened about 5:50 a.m., the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported trip times of 45 minutes or more on I-85 south between Ga. 316 and I-285 just after 6 a.m.

Delays stretched back to Beaver Ruin Road at one point.

But by 7 a.m., the route along I-85 south "developed into a typical Monday morning drive,” the Traffic Center’s Mark Arum said.
