A four-vehicle wreck shut down I-20 in both directions for almost two hours in Newton County on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The Georgia State Patrol said an investigation revealed a Nissan Titan traveling west on I-20 struck a Chevrolet Impala from behind, causing the Impala to cross the grass median into eastbound traffic.

A Saturn Vue headed east lost control when attempting to miss the Impala and overturned multiple times, the GSP said. A Suburu Legacy traveling east then struck the Impala.

Four injured people were transported by Newton County Emergency Medical Services to Atlanta area hospitals, while a fifth was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center, the GSP said. One patient is in critical condition.
