All lanes of I-20 have reopened in East Atlanta after a fire underneath the Moreland Avenue overpass shut down traffic for more than an hour on Saturday morning.
The interstate was closed in both directions shortly before 8:30 a.m. and traffic was diverted onto surface streets, Atlanta fire spokesman Sgt. Cortez Stafford said. Crews have since extinguished the blaze but the cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.
All lanes reopened shortly after 9:30 a.m., but heavy delays remain in both directions of I-20, according to the WSB 24-Hour Traffic Center. Drivers looking to avoid the backups are urged to take DeKalb Avenue or Memorial Drive.
