Clayton County police Wednesday identified three people charged in a Tuesday morning burglary attempt in which a teenage suspect was shot by the victim.
Officers responded to a 3 a.m. call at the Laurel Park Apartments on Ga. 85 near Riverdale about a burglary in progress at an apartment.
“The man who lives there says he saw four men trying to get inside his apartment,” Clayton County police spokesman Ron Coloma said.
“The man says he got his handgun and started shooting at the suspects,” Coloma said in a statement released Wednesday.
One suspect, a 16-year-old juvenile, was shot, but all four suspects got away, according to police.
“About 10 minutes later, officers responded to another apartment in the same complex about someone who had been shot,” Coloma said. “Officers realized it was the juvenile suspect involved in the attempted burglary.”
The juvenile, whose name was not released because of his age, was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, and police arrested the three other suspects.
Xavier Ponder, 17, and Davis Haynes and Ahmadd Stephens, both 19, were charged with burglary-criminal attempt and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to Coloma.
He said police recovered numerous stolen items, and additional charges are pending as detectives continue to investigate the stolen property found in the apartment.
No charges are pending against the resident who shot the juvenile, police said.
