5 things to know today: Critics say Republican redistricting plan ‘likely illegal’

1. Republican redistricting plan in Georgia may be "illegal." A coalition of left-leaning organizations urged Gov. Nathan Deal and lawmakers to scuttle a House Republican plan to redraw the district boundaries of eight Republicans and one Democrat. In a letter sent Tuesday to state leaders, the groups said the redistricting plan outlined in House Bill 515 is "likely illegal" and urged legislators to wait until after the 2020 U.S. Census to make major revisions to the maps. [Read here] 

2. Insurance company failure could cost Georgia $61 million. A massive insurance company failure could end up costing Georgia millions of dollars. Some of the 2,000 Georgia residents who purchased long-term care insurance from the company also could eventually be left without enough money to pay nursing home bills. [Read here] 

3. Hawks' woes continue with big loss to Hornets. The Hawks are reeling and at a loss for answers as they dropped their fourth straight game with a 105-90 defeat to the Hornets on Monday at Spectrum Center. 4. Ex-NFL player jailed after allegedly choking, hitting woman in front of kids. A former NFL player is facing charges after allegedly attacking a woman while children were in the Sandy Springs house, police said. Michael Thomas, who played wide receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2009 to 2012, was in the Fulton County jail Monday. He is accused of beating and strangling a woman on Sunday, police say. [Read here]
