1. AMERICANS HONOR FALLEN SERVICE MEMBERS
Americans across the country celebrated Memorial Day with parades, tributes and traditional observances, including President Barack Obama laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.
2. SECURITY DETERIORATING IN IRAQ
More than 450 people have been killed across Iraq in May. Most of the killings came over the past two weeks in the most sustained wave of violence since U.S. troops left in December 2011.
The decision ramps up the possibility of weapons shipments to the Syrian rebels and "sends a very strong message from Europe to the Assad regime," says Britain's foreign secretary. The move comes just days before peace talks mediated by the U.S. and Russia.

The Memorial Day weekend is supposed to be relaxing. Not so for more than 2,000 aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship that caught fire near the Bahamas.
7. SEVEN KILLED IN MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND WRECKS
Only one fatal accident occured in the Atlanta area during the long weekend. The other fatalities occurred in Washington, Reidsville, Thomasville and Brunswick. Across the state, 258 were injured in 490 accidents.
8. OBAMA GOING BACK TO JERSEY SHORE
With New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie again at his side, the president will take a post-Hurricane Sandy tour of the coastline on Tuesday.

A study suggests that obese mothers who undergo weight-loss surgery give birth to slimmer offspring less prone to diabetes or heart disease.
