1. Cabral Franklin, son of former Mayor Shirley Franklin, has died

According to Franklin's family, the Atlanta political operative died Tuesday from complications of cancer. He was considered one of the state Democratic party's most integral figures. In a statement Tuesday, former mayor Shirley Franklin said, "My dear son passed away today surrounded by his family. He was deeply loved. I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers." 2. Simmons' single gives Braves a skid-ending, walkoff win over Toronto

The Atlanta team snapped a franchise-record 12-game home losing skid with a special contribution from Andrelton Simmons' opposite-field single with one out in the ninth inning. The Braves beat the Toronto Blue Jays in a 3-2 win. Read more.

3. Fayette elects second black in history to county commission

Charles Rousseau will represent Fayette County residents on the county commission — only the second black person to do so. Rousseau, a retired Fulton County government administrator, will fill the term of the late Fayette County Commissioner Pota Coston —the first black person to ever be elected to the county commission. Rousseau will serve as District 5 commissioner until early 2019. Read more.

4. Carters address health issues; give update on Carter Center activities

In the Carter Center event "Conversation with the Carters" Tuesday night, former President Jimmy Carter said he hasn't suffered any ill effects after two of several cancer treatments. The discussion not only touched on his health, but also on the center's programs, race relations and the issues surrounding Syrian refugees. Read more.

5. Gwinnett sheriff: Police lives matter

In a statement by Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway, Conway declared that activists have helped create an atmosphere that has placed officers at risk. He describes a growing "culture of police hatred" and said in his 800-word statement, "All lives, and I repeat, ALL LIVES matter." Local activists including Shaun King, local leader of the Black Lives Matter movement, denounced Conway's comments as ignorant and out-of-touch. Read more.
