1. DFCS fires 2 workers after foster child's death
Following the death of a 2-year-old foster child in state custody, a state child welfare caseworker and supervisor were fired. State officials confirmed that the two were fired on Dec. 2 due to policy violations including problems with a background check of the woman caring for the girl who eventually murdered 2-year-old Laila Marie Daniel. 3. Lawsuit alleges discrimination, neglect of Gullah community
Fifty-seven Sapelo Island property owners and residents filed a lawsuit Wednesday that contends discrimination and neglect by state and local authorities are contributing to the dissolution of one of the last remaining Gullah-Geechee communities in the nation. These residents are descendants of the slaves whose families have lived on the island for over two centuries. Read more.
4. State panel: No cultivation of medical marijuana in Georgia
Just one day after House Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he wants Georgians to have access to cannabis oil made from homegrown marijuana, the state-sanctioned Commission on Medical Cannabis voted down the proposal to allow the plants' cultivation within the state.
