1. DFCS worker failed to investigate signs of child abuse
According to documents obtained Wednesday by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, state child protection workers failed to investigate injuries on 2-year-old Laila Marie Daniel who was in foster care and who later died of abuse, police said. Read more.
The state ethics commission dismissed complaints that former Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine took 19 contributions that were over the legal limit during his 2010 race, citing the state's statute of limitations. However, the panel also decided to move ahead on charges that he spent more than $200,000 in runoff and general election contributions in 2010 — even though he didn't run in those races. Read more.
3. Georgia legislator, ex-commisioner could face criminal investigations
The state's ethic commission found probable cause that state Rep. Earnest G. Smith, an Augusta Democrat, violated various state laws in the handling of campaign cash. In another case, former Clayton County Commissioner Wole Ralph could also face a criminal investigation involving failure to report or itemize $109,200 in contributions and more. Read more.
4. Arrest made in Georgia State student robbery inside library
GSU police arrested Daniel Duplessy, 38, on charges of armed robbery inside the school library Tuesday. Duplessy may also be responsible for a previous crime on campus and he has been arrested several times on theft charges over the past three years. Read more.
5. Associate AD Theresa Wenzel leaving Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech associate athletic director Theresa Wenzel will end a 10-year term at the school at the end of the month. During her time as AD, Wenzel oversaw women's basketball, golf, softball and more. "I appreciate everything she's done," athletic director Mike Bobinski said Wednesday. Read more.
