1. Chipper returning to Braves as special assistant

Atlanta's iconic third baseman has been hired as Braves special assistant to baseball operations, the team announced Thursday.  Jones, 43, will report to president of baseball operations John Hart and general manager John Coppolella. Read more.

2. DFCS chief: Girl's death does not reflect larger agency problems

The recent death of a 2-year-old girl in foster care doesn't reflect the state agency's problems, according to Georgia's child protection chief. However, a local child welfare advocate said the agency made mistakes in watching Laila Marie Daniel while she was in foster care. Read more.

3. Judge to state, feds: Speed up help for the mentally disabled

U.S. District Court Judge Charles Pannell on Thursday told state officials and the U.S. Department of Justice to speed up efforts to improve Georgia's system for those with mental illness and developmental disabilities. The hearing came in the wake of a September report on Georgia's lack of progress in the area. Read more.

4. Water wars concern prompts revolt from Georgia delegation

A Georgia delegation revolt created chaos in the Capitol's leadership suites, but everything settled down once a last-minute tweak in language was made in connection to a bill. The House and Senate are both set to vote Friday on this $1.1 trillion bill to set spending policy through September.  An inital version included lines from Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala. requesting a report on "violations of Federal water contracts involving multi-State river basins." Read more.

5. GBI: Clarkesville mayor died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound

According to the GBI, Clarkesville Mayor Terry Greene, who died during a domestic disturbance at his home, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said, "Further forensic testing will be done before an official autopsy report is issued." Read more.
