Q: Can you tell me if a sitting President of the United States has ever been the commencement speaker at Morehouse College prior to President Barack Obama?

— Edwin Moore, Charlotte, N.C.

A: Obama will be the first president to give the commencement speech at Morehouse, media relations manager Elise Durham told Q&A on the News in an email. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported in February that Obama would give Morehouse's commencement speech in May and that it was selected because it is "one of the nation's leading historical black colleges and universities (and) is among the best and brightest institutions of higher education in the country. Known for its high standard for excellence in learning and social consciousness, Morehouse is home to a long list of notable alumni that spans the last three centuries." Durham said it will be the first time a current president has given the commencement speech at a Georgia college or university since Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke at the University of Georgia's graduation on Aug. 11, 1938.
