A man seen on video licking Blue Bell Ice Cream at a Texas Walmart immediately began his 30-day jail sentence Thursday.

KEYE reported D'Adrien Anderson went viral in August 2019 after he posted a video of himself taking a tub of ice cream out of the freezer at a Port Arthur, Texas, Walmart, opening the tub, licking it across the top, closing the lid and putting it back in the freezer.

KTRK reported the store confirmed that Anderson ended up buying the exact item he tampered with. Surveillance video showed Anderson purchasing the item, according to Walmart.

Anderson, 24, was charged with criminal mischief and posted $1,000 bond, KRIS reported.

Jefferson County District Attorney Bob Wortham told KFDM about the time of the incident that the charges were to help Anderson set an example that the behavior, dubbed the ice cream challenge, wouldn't happen in the county.

Anderson told KFDM last year that, although he didn't agree with the charge, he understood he needed to be made into an example.

“It really hit me. I was like, ‘Oh, I’m going to get in trouble for this,’ ” he said. “Whoever do pranks and stuff like that, don’t lick the ice cream.”

In addition to the 30-day jail sentence, Anderson will have to complete 100 hours of community service and pay a $1,000 fine. The Associated Press reported that he was also sentenced to an additional six-month jail term probated for two years.

KRIS reported Anderson would also have to pay restitution to Blue Bell for the cost of throwing out the ice cream. KTRK reported it cost Blue Bell Creameries $1,565 to replace the ice cream.
